EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

High school is such an awkward time in a child’s life when uncertainty and self consciousness abounds. It is so easy for students to think less of themselves and believe that everyone else knows exactly what they are doing while they themselves have no clue. This uncertainty can cause students to take a step back from engagement out of pure terror.
Students who have a sense of confidence in what they can do can start to form an idea of who they are and who they would like to be.As a teacher, I want to be there to help them take a step forward. I want to help them build self confidence through discovering their own talents and their own competencies. Students who have a sense of confidence in what they can do can start to form an idea of who they are and who they would like to be. That first step in learning more about the individual student and discovering their competencies can significantly improve student engagement.

An engaged student learns and discovers more about what they like and dislike and consequently can develop a stronger sense of identity and purpose. A student with a sense of purpose is much less likely to drop out or give in to self destructive tendencies. My philosophy as an educator is simply this: every student has a drive and skill and as educators it is our job to find and hone these competencies to form engaged and confident members of society.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

I have a Bachelors degree in Biology from Concordia University where I took advantage of several science and math courses. From there, I completed a Masters Degree in Teaching and Learning at McGill University in Science and Technology Education. Within my Master’s Degree, I completed a capstone on “The Potential for the Enhancement of Multiple Intelligence in the Classroom Through the Utilization of Technology”. From there I have attended seminars in order to improve my pedagogy.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My initial experience with teaching was coaching downhill skiing. Since I found I loved anything to do with teaching, I continued to tutor throughout university and my Master’s degree. My teaching experience includes an internship at FACE highschool in Montreal teaching math and science, a 6 month substitution position at Villa Maria Highschool teaching science and I am currently a part time technology teacher at The Study

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

At every school I have worked at I have started a Japanese Culture club to teach students Japanese and about Japanese Culture. I also coach rowing and debate at The Study as well as help out with cross-country skiing in the winter. I find that this also gives me a better chance to see how the students learn so that I can enhance my classroom.
