North Liberty District and Curriculum

Teaching and learning follow Iowa Core Curriculum – a student-based approach used for implementing high academic expectations aligned with Common Core State Standards. Standards are performance based, specific to each grade level. The Common Core framework deals with fewer Mathematics and Language Arts topics that students will dig deeper into, rather than briefly touching on every topic imaginable.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Liberty District Curriculum
Elementary grades are an introduction to new skills and ideas, helping K-6 students gain experience and master concepts, to then build on as they develop. Junior high grades are centered on the educational needs of adolescents as they transition between elementary school and high school. High school years are an opportunity for students to select courses and electives specific to potential college and career interests, developing necessary employability skills for the workforce.
In the subjects of Literacy and Mathematics, the Iowa Core Standards provide structure for instruction intended to further the depth of knowledge within student learning. Instruction focuses on recall, skills and concepts, strategic thinking and extended thinking. Students engage in each of these areas in learning Mathematics and Literacy, to then carry over in other subjects of Science, Social Studies and, in high school, Technical Education.

Chalk Talk: Special Programs
Many schools offer programs during the school year as well as during the summer. Programs offered before or after school give students additional learning opportunities in a safe and fun environment they’re familiar with. Those offered during the summer give your child time to be with their classmates again without the structure of the classroom, opening their eyes to how enjoyable school can be. Summer programs also provide a transition back into the school setting for new students, children that have been away most of the summer or just getting re-acquainted to the idea of going back to school. Students can learn things they may only touch on during classroom learning or learn something brand new, expanding their interests. Look into programs your school may offer, or if you feel that you and members of your community can offer a new program or introduce a new activity to students, volunteer to do so!
